Analyst - Utilities

Boston, MA
Full Time

Utilities and Independent Power Producers (IPP) are at the heart of the energy transition, supporting efforts to decarbonize via electrification while also tasked with integrating large amounts of intermittent and distributed generation in the grid. Lux Research is seeking to hire an Analyst on our Utilities team, which works with utilities and IPPs to understand opportunities and impacts created by this transformational change. In this role you will scope and execute research projects on a variety of emerging technologies related to the electrical grid which help Lux clients make better decisions about investments, partnerships, and overall technology strategy development. These technologies include novel power generation technologies like wind and solar, innovations in transmission and distribution infrastructure and energy storage, as well as a variety of behind the meter technologies.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of utility and IPP business models, and how electrical grids operate, with at least two years of experience working with or within utilities or IPPs. They also have a strong sense of intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn and write about a variety of emerging technologies related to the grid. This role includes client-facing interactions, so strong communications skills – both written and oral – are highly desired. Experience with project management is a plus, as this role includes overseeing a number of research deliverables to ensure projects are completed on time. Additionally, this role may include managing a small number of junior researchers on the team.

  • An undergraduate degree with 4 years of utility-related experience or masters with 2 years of utility-related or IPP-related experience
  • Technical knowledge of how the grid operates including power generation, transmission and distribution, and behind-the-meter assets
  • Deep intellectual curiosity about emerging technologies and ability to workshop and surface clear ideas with thought partners
  • Ability to communicate – both written and orally – concisely and effectively to high-level decision makers and at conferences or other events
  • Entrepreneurial, enthusiastic, collegial, and collaborative approach to work
  • High degree of organization and attention to detail with project management experience; ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Superior listening and critical thinking skills; ability to speak articulately and think on your feet
  • Strong analytical skills, both qualitative and quantitative

  • Manage a small team of researchers focused on utility innovation to ensure projects are completed on-time to a sufficient level of quality
  • Oversee execution of several research projects at one time
  • Work with a geographically diverse team to develop and test research hypotheses and prepare findings for clients
  • Conduct primary research with startups and other technology innovators and write reviews which critically examine their technology merits and business models
  • Conduct secondary research drawing on diverse sources, including business and trade press, academic publications, investments, patent filings, and conference presentations
  • Directly support and advise innovation clients, leveraging research from across the team – on phone and in person
  • Working with the Energy Transition team, help craft coverage priorities and a research agenda over the course of the year
  • Produce and manage written research reports
  • Represent Lux Research as a speaker at technology conferences
  • Understand client business needs to develop and deliver high-value research
