Lux Research is looking for analytical, technology-minded individuals who are looking to explore employment opportunities outside of a lab or engineering setting. Lux Research’s Materials & Manufacturing research team studies emerging technologies such as advanced recycling, sustainable materials, 3D printing, metamaterials, materials informatics, synthetic biology, bio-based polymers, CO2 utilization, digital modeling, and more. We tackle complex issues like sustainability and the circular economy, the growing role of digital tools in materials development and use, and corporate strategy for the chemicals and materials industries.

Job Description

Research Associates (RAs) generate the core research that helps Lux Research clients make better decisions about sustainable innovation. They interview developers of cutting-edge technologies, create profiles of emerging companies, and follow and comment on key developments in their fields of expertise. At Lux, RAs are known for their thorough knowledge of and insight into their coverage area and use it to support Lux’s signature reports and client advice. 

RAs’ core responsibilities and expectations include:

  • Research: RAs conduct primary research on innovative technology companies in their coverage area for in-depth profiles with bold, defensible analysis. They follow key developments and trends and use their expertise to produce relevant news commentaries, case studies, technology overviews, and insightful blog-length pieces. 
  • RAs also support Analysts and other colleagues in producing major research reports with deeper technology and market analysis. RAs help identify and suggest key companies, topics, technologies, and themes Lux should be covering to stay on the cutting edge. 
  • Clients: RAs help prepare for and participate in discussions with clients, delivering information and insights on sustainable innovation in their areas of expertise.     
  • As appropriate, RAs may help build Lux’s reputation through social media and networking at key industry events and contribute to consulting engagements.  
  • Team: RAs assist with the operations of a diverse, global team and provide guidance to new colleagues as needed. They take a proactive approach to their own professional development as well as suggesting ways to improve Lux and collaborate effectively across teams. They may also participate in team- and company-wide initiatives. 

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience with outstanding record of achievement in a relevant STEM field is required. Master’s degree and/or 2+ years of work experience is a plus.
  • Deep intellectual curiosity about and passion for emerging technologies and sustainable innovation
  • Willingness to go the extra mile to meet client needs in a fast-moving, rapidly growing, environment
  • Entrepreneurial, enthusiastic, collegial, and collaborative approach to work; a good sense of humor is a plus.
  • High degree of organization and attention to detail; ability to juggle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to write clearly and incisively about business and technical topics.
  • Superior listening and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to speak articulately and think on your feet
  • Strong analytical skills, both qualitative and quantitative
  • Excellent office software skills (Excel proficiency required)
  • Fluency in spoken and written Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean is a plus; European or Middle Eastern language skills are also desirable. English fluency is a must.
